What You'll Do:
Do you have a passion for creativity, overcoming challenges, and striving for innovation? As a member of our corporate Innovation team, you'll be responsible for bringing the future of Serta Simmons to life and providing the blueprint for future products within the organization.
In this role, you will be primarily responsible for closing prototype mattresses – a critical step in the mattress-building process. Mattress closing is a skilled operation that involves using a tape edge sewing machine to secure the upholstery with the closing tape around the perimeter of the mattress.
The tape edge machine operates on a track and moves around the mattress, requiring physical strength, precision, and a unique skill set different from standard flat sewing.
Serta Simmons mattresses are constructed with high-quality, heavy materials, and finished products can weigh up to 250 lbs. This role involves the frequent handling, lifting, and maneuvering of large materials and completed mattresses.
How You'll Do It:
- Adhere to company Safety, Quality, Service, and Cost initiatives.
- Recommend internal and external raw material requirements.
- Assist in the development of Work Assembly Instructions.
- Perform Preventative Maintenance for assigned equipment.
- Perform minor machine maintenance-report machine malfunctions.
- Recommend equipment changes.
- Recommend production and process methods.
- Maintain housekeeping standards.
- Cross train to perform various sewing functions including but not limited to, Box Spring Sewing, Label Sewing, Panel/Border Over Casting, Panel/Border Repair, Pillow Top Sewing/Blind Stitch, and Flat Panel Cutting.
- Cross train to Back up Panel/Quilt Machine Operator.
- Pack out, shipping and receiving.
- Management reserves the right to add to or modify the duties and/or responsibilities.
What You'll Bring:
- 2-3 years of previous Closing/Matt Finish and sewing experience in an industrial setting preferred.
- A strong attention to detail and styling
- Ability to communicate professionally with multiple levels of company-wide leadership
- Extreme comfort with championing innovative solutions and questioning integrity/ product feels & looks
- Inspire others through indirect leadership and an ability to work and collaborate cross-functionally with others.
- High School degree or equivalent
- Up to 10% travel towards offsite locations to set up sample prototype products
- Frequent walking, lifting, sitting at sewing machine and lifting up to 50 pounds
- Overtime and occasional Saturday work as needed
